What is a GST Calculator?
Our GST Calculator is a free, high-speed utility designed for business owners, accountants, freelancers, and consumers. It allows you to compute the Goods & Services Tax (GST) for any purchase or invoice amount instantly. You can easily calculate GST Exclusive (adding tax to a base amount) or GST Inclusive (reversing GST out of a final price) along with exact CGST, SGST, and IGST tax splits.
How to Calculate GST (Formulas)
Depending on whether tax is added to or included in the price, use the formulas below:
1. GST Exclusive Formula (Add GST)
Use this formula when you know the net base price and want to add tax:
- GST Amount = (Net Amount × GST Rate) ÷ 100
- Gross Total = Net Amount + GST Amount
2. GST Inclusive Formula (Remove GST)
Use this formula when you know the final bill amount and need to extract the underlying net price and tax portion:
- Net Amount = Total Amount ÷ (1 + (GST Rate ÷ 100))
- GST Amount = Total Amount - Net Amount
GST Tax Rate Slabs in India
Under the Goods & Services Tax structure, items and services are categorized into standard tax rate slabs:
- 0% Slab: Exempt items such as fresh vegetables, unbranded food grains, milk, and basic necessities.
- 5% Slab: Essential goods including packaged foods, tea, coffee, edible oil, and life-saving medicines.
- 12% Slab: Standard consumer products such as computers, processed foods, mobile devices, and business travel.
- 18% Slab: Most IT services, software, Telecom services, restaurants, financial services, and industrial capital goods.
- 28% Slab: Luxury goods, automobiles, air conditioners, high-end electronics, and premium hospitality.
Understanding CGST, SGST, and IGST
India's dual GST framework categorizes taxes based on transaction geography:
- CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales (within the same state). Represents 50% of the total GST rate.
- SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the State Government on intra-state sales. Represents 50% of the total GST rate.
- IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales (between two different states) and imported goods. Equal to 100% of the GST rate.
